Spotlight on Teachers

This week, Franklin had the opportunity to hear directly from teachers across the nation responsible for teaching students what it means to live in a democracy and what they can do to keep it strong. The Houston Chronicle asks, are Americans flunking democracy?

According to the Educating for American Democracy’s recently released “Educating for American Democracy Roadmap,” the entire nation needs to work on better understanding the basics of a self-governing nation.

“The Roadmap is neither a set of standards nor a curriculum,” two executive board members recently wrote in the Washington Post. Instead, it seeks to identify strategies that stress critical thinking, general understanding of basic principles including the importance of compromise, civic honesty and patriotism.
